If left untreated, the infection can spread past the gum line and into the bone. Then it progresses to periodontitis, a more dangerous form of gum disease.
Periodontitis and gingivitis have both been linked to an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, pneumonia, and cancer.

Scaling the tooth and planing the root are the two parts of this process, as the name implies. A thorough cleaning of the tooth’s surfaces and just below the gum line is referred to as scaling. Using specialized tools, plaque and tartar are cleaned from all of your teeth. Next, we polish the surface of your teeth’s roots, making it more difficult for tartar and plaque to form again, as well as assisting your gums in reattaching, reducing tartar pockets. Finally, antibiotic treatments are used to control your periodontal infection.
You might experience some discomfort, but periodontal exams are generally pain-free.
